Nathan LightSpeed Pak

By Mark Keller · On June 26, 2014

The name of this little running belt refers not only to the upper limit at which waves and particles operate, but also to the two most salient features of the apparatus itself—weighing just 1.8 oz., the LightSpeed Pak helps you reach your personal best minutes-to-miles ratio.

With a pocket capacity of 15.2 cubic inches, this belt can carry quite a bit more than you would expect from looking at it. Many runners report being able to fit both a smartphone and a set of keys or other small object in the pocket simultaneously, and the Amazon ad copy informs us that it “magically expands”. The wizardry here owes more to engineering than the eldritch, but the combination of low-profile lightweight construction and high-capacity storage is still impressive. The pouch is made of weather-resistant material for runnin’ in the rain, and is secured by a zipper up top.

And you can devote that space entirely to the necessary accoutrements of modernity, because the LightSpeed Pak offers a better way to store your energy gels. The shock cord system that runs along the length of the belts non-pouch region is designed to secure gels all around your waist. No unzipping needed—simply grab a gel from the perimeter and keep on running. There’s no hard data on just how many it can carry (all sources unhelpfully report “several”), but to all appearances it’s as many as you’d ever need, numbering over a dozen.

The belt itself is soft and non-chafing, making it a fully comfortable accessory for a shirtless run, and the 20% elasticity ensures a fit that prevents it from bouncing around. The belt comes in a single size, but the adjustable buckle allows use by runners of all dimensions. Race toggles are included, and they’re fully adjustable as well—clip them onto any part of the belt to position your number exactly where you want it. Reflective strips on the pocket increase visibility, and while the belt itself is available only in the signature black/yellow/white color combo, the pocket can be black, navy blue or dark pink to suit your fancy.

The belt can be purchased at several real-world retailers, from the company, and from numerous online stores.

This belt is very comfortable and fits my phone, which was why I got it! So far, so good! But can you please post a tutorial on (1) using and relocating the big toggles and (2) using the gel holder cord. Thanks!
